So you go to fill up your propane tank and they tell you that it has expired, what’s up with that? Well thanks to our federal government propane tanks do actually expire every 12 years and some tanks even have a warning about it stamped on the upper ring. They cite safety reasons for this law. So how do you handle an expired propane tank?
How to know that your tank has expired: All recently manufactured 20 pound propane tanks have a date stamp on the top ring, (see image above) this is when the tank was made. If you add 12 years to that date that would be the expiration date. In the case of our tank pictured above the date is 02/2014 so the expiration date is 02/2026.
Temperature control on charcoal grill is all in the vent settings of your grill and a few other easy to control factors. In this post we are going in depth into the vent settings on a Weber Kettle and what temperatures you can expect to reach with them. This is geared towards someone who is new to charcoal grilling.
When your just starting out grilling with it is important to be consentient with the amount of charcoal you use. We are using a basic charcoal chimney full (around 5lb’s of charcoal) but you can measure it with whatever you would like. A few suggestions are 2 coffee cans full or 3 or 4 extra large plastic cups full of coals. Piled to one side of your grill.
Once you have your charcoal lit (we have several articles about this that can be found here, here, or here) bring your grill up to temp. We do this by covering the grill and leaving both vents wide open, letting the grill sit for about 10 minutes. Leaving your top vent open at all times adjust your lower vent to where you need it set (see below) open the lid for a few seconds, if closing the vent and recover the grill. Let it sit for around 5 to 10 minutes and you should be where you need to be.
To make your charcoal burn longer use a technique we like to call “the ring of fire”. Typically you will get about an hour of good grilling time out of a pile of charcoal and you would need to add more coals to extend your cooking time. Or you could start with a large pile of unlit coals and add hot coals and control the heat with your dampers. Getting you several hours of low and slow cooking time. With this technique you can achieve almost 300 degree temperatures and hold them for more than 4 hours.
For the purpose of this article here are some specifics about the equipment we will be using. The grill is a typical 22 inch Weber kettle grill and we will be using Kingsford charcoal. It is also worth noting that this was a cool 30 degree day outside with little wind and it began to snow about half way through.
